Chief Poundmaker

Poundmaker was a storied figure during and around the Riel Resistance of 1885.  By most accounts, he tried to do his best to promote and keep the peace.  I once read a book co-authored by Blair Stonechild and Bill Waiser titled, ‘Loyal Til Death’.  The book accounts for first nations involvement (or lack thereof) in the Riel Rebellion.  For the most part, first nations peoples saw the conflict as not pertaining to them, as they had signed treaties with ‘The Great White Mother’ (Queen Victoria).  They intended to honour those treaties.

Poundmaker is featured in the Star Phoenix Canada 150 series.
