I came across this article today and thought others may also find it interesting. Though this particular article is about North Dakota, these houses are found throughout the prairies. University of Saskatchewan Soil Scientist Les Henry published a detailed book titled ‘Catalogue Houses: Eatons and others’.
Today, the catalogue house seems a most peculiar phenomenon. Judging by its popularity, however, it was a concept that was right for the times.

I didn’t know there were so many different styles of houses! The one on Main Street in Nokomis is from Eatons, isn’t it?

I’m not sure which one that is, but there are several in town. Generally, I’ve noticed that anything with a hip roof was an Eaton’s house.

I live in an Eaton’s catalogue house and have a blog about our restoration of it. We moved it from the Davidson area to up around Aberdeen. You’d probably find our project interesting.
