Today, I picked up a copy of People Places by Bill Barry. Mister Barry was well known for his research and documentation of place names in Saskatchewan. Mister Barry passed away in 2015 after immeasurable contributions to Saskatchewan. His latest project was developing the Saskatchewan Virtual War Museum, a noble endeavour for sure.
In one of those convoluted moments when ideas beget ideas, as I leafed through the book, I got thinking about the characters of Corner Gas. For those not familiar, Corner Gas was a sitcom set in Dog River (Rouleau), Saskatchewan, and though I’m horrendously biased, was nothing short of sheer genius. The show ran for six seasons, from 2004 to 2009. This was followed by a movie, then an animated series that is currently airing.
Anyone familiar with the show knows that the characters’ last names are all taken from actual places around Saskatchewan. I thought it might be fun to do a series of blog posts about these towns and villages. Stay tuned!
